Woolfrey House

The Woolfrey House is a two story log house built in 1887. The Echo Dale Farm Society has restored the house to the 1900-1910 era. It is a fully furnished four bedroom structure with a working kitchen. The Woolfrey House is open from mid April to late
September and is staffed by Society staff and volunteers.

Interpretive staff present a "snapshot" of prairie farm life at the turn of the century through tours of the house as well as demonstrations of wood stone cooking, soap making and other activities appropriate to the early 1900's.

Admission to the Woolfrey House is free, however donations are gratefully accepted.

Historical Background

Henry Doc Scatcherd built this home in the late 1800's on homestead land near the present site of the Medicine Hat Airport. It passed through the hands of many owners including the areas first druggist, a hotelkeeper, two engineers, a chicken farmer, a horse breeder, and others. The Family of Mr. Minto Hughes (a local resident) lived in the house in the early 1900's. In 1924 the Woolfrey Family who lived in this house for fifty years purchased the home. In 1984 Bill and Alberta Woolfrey donated the house to the City of Medicine Hat. It was moved to its present location in the Echo Dale Regional Park, where it has been fully restored.
